In the heart of the Khalawi of Omdurman, Sudan, I created my
artwork titled “Bearer of the Quran,” a tribute to the invaluable
role these traditional schools play in teaching the Quran and
nurturing spiritual and intellectual growth

Khalawi in Sudan are traditional institutions dedicated to
Quranic memorization and the teaching of Islamic sciences.
They serve as educational sanctuaries open to students of all
ages and backgrounds, drawing individuals from across the
country who are deeply committed to learning the Quran. Life in
the Khalawi is characterized by simplicity and devotion,
reflecting the unwavering determination of these students to
pursue knowledge despite limited resources and significant
challenges.

The artwork “Bearer of the Quran” is an Arabic calligraphy piece
that embodies the elegance and flow of the script, symbolizing
the sacred mission carried by these students and their
resilience in the face of adversity. Through this work, I aimed to
highlight their persistence and dedication to learning, while
showcasing how Arabic calligraphy can serve as a visual
expression of their commitment and the beauty of the
knowledge they uphold.

This artwork is more than just a piece of calligraphy; it is
a message of gratitude to those who dedicate their lives to the
pursuit of knowledge and a reminder of the Khalawi’s vital role
as beacons of education and enlightenment in Sudanese
society.
